Fit, Flexible & Strong Wellness Program

The Fit, Flexible, & Strong Wellness Program was designed by Mary Baudo, Certified Personal Trainer and Wellness Coach. This popular program is now in its 7th year under the auspices of the Boothbay Region Health Center.

Wellness Coach, Mary Baudo is in the center, with two participants of the Fit, Flexible, Strong program on each side.

After the first couple of years of trial and error trying to provide an affordable program that didn’t require a health club “membership,” the participants came up with a sustainable business model so they could continue to enjoy the benefits of this program. They pre-pay on a monthly basis. Most stay for the entire 8-month program.

During the COVID Pandemic, we were able to continue the program, thanks to the generosity of the Boothbay Railway Village and the Southport United Methodist Church.

Fit, Flexible, Strong runs from October to the end of May each year. Each participant receives three detailed assessments of their strength, flexibility, and balance at the beginning, middle and end of the 8-month program.

Each session includes a 20-minute chalk talk about a different aspect of wellness and a 40-minute set of exercises for strength, flexibility & balance. You can sign up for a month at a time, paying for each month in advance. Most participants keep going through the entire 8-month session and return again for the next year. Mary provides a detailed set of “do it yourself” exercises to keep participants going for the summer months.

Testimonials:

“My physician told me that, at 68, I am in better health now than I was 10 years ago.  And, thanks to your program, I have the strength and endurance to push my husband’s wheelchair easily. Your class is so important to me and my health.”

“One of the biggest differences between this program and an exercise class is Mary’s coaching about healthy lifestyle choices. The camaraderie and support of the group is also very important to me. It helped me get through the grief of losing my husband, and left to my own, I’m not as likely to follow a regular regimen.”

“Mary is the best feature of this class. Her support and guidance keep me trying to do better. The exercises and skills Mary teaches help me to a healthy aging. I don’t understand why there isn’t a waiting list for this program!”

As a community we can:

1. Take local control of our primary health service.

2. Establish a patient-driven primary care practice model

3. Increase access and use primary health care services appropriately.

4. Make both individual and community-wide choices that will result in improved health status.

1. Get a higher percentage of the population into an ongoing relationship with a primary care provider.

2. Reduce perhaps by half the number of unnecessary Emergency Department and Urgent Care visits.

3. Achieve a demonstrable improvement in the health status of the community.
