Dr. Steve Cook Becomes Medical Director

January 15, 2019

Dr. Stephen E. Cook, M.D. has accepted the post as Medical Director for the Boothbay Region Health Center. A native Mainer from Tenants’ Harbor, and the son of a lobsterman, Steve is a graduate of Harvard University and the University of Cincinnati Medical School.

Dr. Stephen E. Cook

For five years, Steve was a resident in general surgery at Maine Medical Center before returning to Cincinnati for a two-year fellowship in vascular surgery. Cook practiced as a vascular surgeon in Bangor before coming to St. Andrews Hospital in Boothbay Harbor in 2005. He practiced as an Emergency Room physician at St. Andrews Hospital for eight years, until the end of 2013.

But Cook wasn’t ready to retire from medical practice and took a job in Arizona helping members of the Tohono O’odham Nation at a small hospital on their reservation in the Sonoran desert. In 2016, Cook returned to medicine in Maine, practicing at an occupational health clinic in Brunswick. There, he evaluated musculoskeletal injuries which he credits with broadening the spectrum of his clinical experience. Steve was involved with the strategic planning for the Boothbay Region Health Center. He also launched an Empowered Patients’ study group in the region. Steve joined the Health Center staff in January, 2019. Steve lives in East Boothbay, Maine.

St Andrews Urgent Care

Don’t Pay ER Prices for Urgent Care

The Lincoln Health Urgent Care facility on St. Andrews campus bills out as a Type B Emergency Room, even though it provides Urgent Care level of service. That’s because the St. Andrews Urgent Care operates as a “satellite” of Miles Memorial Hospital in Damariscotta. What that billing designation means in practice is that the costs […]

As a community we can:

1. Take local control of our primary health service.

2. Establish a patient-driven primary care practice model

3. Increase access and use primary health care services appropriately.

4. Make both individual and community-wide choices that will result in improved health status.

1. Get a higher percentage of the population into an ongoing relationship with a primary care provider.

2. Reduce perhaps by half the number of unnecessary Emergency Department and Urgent Care visits.

3. Achieve a demonstrable improvement in the health status of the community.
